Leading Research in Fisheries Economics

Professor and Canada Research Chair (Tier 1) in Interdisciplinary Ocean and Fisheries Economics at the Institute for the Oceans and Fisheries, and the School of Public Policy and Global Affairs, University of British Columbia.

His research focuses on bioeconomics, marine ecosystem valuation and the analysis of global issues such as fisheries subsidies, marine protected areas, illegal fishing, climate change, marine plastic pollution, and oil spills.

Dr. Sumaila is a prolific scholar whose advice is sought by institutions like the World Trade Organization and the United Nations, and has earned many awards including the 2017 Volvo Environment Prize, a Fellowship in the Royal Society of Canada, and the prestigious 2023 Tyler Prize for Environmental Achievement.

Sumaila-Volvo Graduate Prize in Environmental Sustainability

Upon being named the 2017 Volvo Environment Prize laureate, Dr. Sumaila created the Sumaila-Volvo Graduate Prize in Environmental Sustainability, an annual grant awarded to one or more MSc or PhD students whose peer-reviewed publications to date are expected to have the most significant impact on the field of environmental sustainability.
